Man killed while mowing

A Florida man drowned Monday when the lawn mower he was driving rolled into a pond.
Leroy Herbert Thomas, 72, Avon Park, Fla. was mowing around a pond at the residence of his son, Brian on Old Trail Road, when according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the lawnmower, he was driving tumbled down a steep bank and into the water.
Thomas was trapped under the mower and drowned, according to Whitley County Deputy Coroner C. Taron Smith.
“He just got too close to the edge of the pond,” said Smith.
Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith said he was in the water approximately one hour before his wife saw the lawn mower in the water and called authorities.
Responding to the scene were Whitley County Emergency Medical Service, the Union Township Fire Department, the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the dive team from Thorncreek Township and the coroner’s office.
According to Smith, the Thomases arrived from Florida Friday to visit their son and daughter-in-law.
Thomas’s body will be taken back to Avon Park for burial.
