M. Irene Smith, 91

M. Irene Smith, 91, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday July 30, 2013, at Millers Merry Manor.
Born Aug. 28, 1921, in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Avery M. and Florence (Kiser) George.
She attended Grace Elementary School and graduated from Jefferson Center High School with the Class of 1940.
Irene was a lifelong Whitley County resident, worked on the family farm and was also a homemaker. She was a member of the Oak Grove Church of God in Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include children, DeWayne Smith of Columbia City, Barbara (Richard) Cartwright of Churubusco, Karen (Roy) Sandlin of Huntington, and Toni (Kenneth) Brewster of Grand Mound, Iowa; grandchildren, Carmen Cartwright, Andy Cartwright, and Troy Sandlin; brother, Lester (Helena) George of Fort Wayne; two great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard G. Smith; sister, Mildred L. Judd; brother, Elmer N. George; son, Gary A. Smith; and grandson, Dan S. Cartwright.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastors Stephen Johnson and Toni Brewster officiating. The burial will follow at Oak Grove (Compton) Cemetery, Columbia City.
