LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: School board argues over admin offices

September 23, 2013

PIERCETON — School leaders have been preparing for dust to fly as Whitko Community School Corporation prepares for two large construction projects.

However, it was difference of opinions that flew across the board room at September’s meeting of the district’s Board of Trustees.

The green light has already been given for South Whitley Elementary School to be remodeled and for Pierceton Elementary School to be rebuilt.

What has yet to be determined is where the district’s administration offices will be located. Two options were the focus of discussion for school officials — to build the administration offices in Pierceton, along with the new school project, or relocate the offices inside of Whitko Middle School where some board members feel there is extra room already constructed.

“I would not like to see the offices moved into WMS,” said board member Georgia Tenney. “That would crowd the kids. When we are so concerned over bullying, putting that many kids together would create problems. I would never agree to offices in WMS.”

Best laid plans

A facility plan was conducted by a committee made up of teachers and community members. In that study, it was recommended that the offices be located in WMS.

However, Superintendent Steve Clason said the board did not adopt that portion of the plan.
