COLUMBIA CITY â Andrea White, of Columbia City, has literally been around the world.
She wants to go back to the other side of the planet, but first, she is going to live in a cardboard box.
In a project called âHope for the Philippines,â White and a few friends will stay in a cardboard box shelter they will set up on the lawn of Columbia Cityâs City Hall for 24 hours.
The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the conditions some people are living in at a squatter village in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.
âThere are about 50,000 people just in Manila that live in squatter villages like this,â said White. âI thought, âWhy not live like them for 24 hours, try to raise some funds to go on the trip, as well as bring awareness to their situation?â Not that we donât know it in America, but itâs really easy to forget when we get busy with our lives that people live like this daily, not just for 24 hours.â
White intends to go to such a village in Manila this May for two weeks with Kids International Ministries (KIM).
âThere I will do mission work and bring some hope to the people in this squatter village where this ministry site is,â said
She will minister to Filipino children and adults living in poverty, help in the childrenâs home there and feed those without food.
Before she goes, White will live for a day like the people she is going to serve in the Philippines.
âHope for the Philippinesâ will last from 7 a.m. Saturday, April 27 to 7 a.m. Sunday, April 28.
White said while she is spending her time in front of City Hall, sheâll be happy to talk to anyone that wants to know more about the ministry she is working with, the people she will be helping and where she will be in the Philippines.
