Lady Eagle soccer picks up first win; downs Garrett 2-0
Columbia City’s Hannah Wappes turns the ball upfield against Garrett.
COLUMBIA CITY — Following a season opening tie against Manchester Monday, Columbia City’s Lady Eagle soccer team picked up its first win of the year Thursday evening, as senior midfielder Haley Boner led the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 win over the visiting Garrett Lady Railroaders.
The Lady Eagles made a rush at the Garrett goal, drawing the keeper out.
The ball squirted free rolling behind the defense and Boner drove the ball into the open net to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead with 35:49 left in the first half. Boner’s goal would prove to be the only one of the half.
Columbia City’s defense shut the Lady Railroaders down almost completely.
The Lady Eagles’ offense picked up in the second half as it got several scoring opportunities that came up just short, until with 7:42 left in the game, Boner took the ball down the left sideline, then along the Garrett end line before lofting a sharply angled shot over the Garrett keeper which tucked just inside the far upright of the goal, giving the Lady Eagles an insurance point and the 2-0 win.
The defense, led by Alaina Beckner and Carley Porter with help from midfielders Boner and freshman Hannah Wappes and Hannah Cotter all helped limit the Railroaders to a handful of shots on goal.
“Our defense is very veteran,” said Wiley. ”We have a lot of kids on defense who have had some varsity minutes. On the other hand, our offense is very, very young. I can’t complain when they are that young and still get that many shots on goal.”
The win, the first of the season for the Lady Eagles, runs their record to 1-0-1 as the Eagles travel to face the Leo Lady Lions Monday.
