Joyce “Max” Ummel 70

Joyce “Max” Ummel, 70, Columbia City, died and went to his heavenly home at 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City, where he had been a resident for 17 years.

He was born July 31, 1940 in Elkhart County to Edward and Edith (Anglemyer) Ummel, where he was raised on a Holstein dairy farm until he was 18.

Surviving are his sisters, Carol Hines of Avilla, Joan Kirkham, of Greencastle, Lois (Arlo) Knouff of Larwill and Phyllis Swick of Columbia City; brothers, D. Eldon Ummel of Syracuse and Herbert (Muriel) Ummel of Wakarusa; sisters-in-law, Jackie Ummel (formerly of Brazil, South America) of Fort Wayne, Nancy Ummel of Goshen; 24 nieces and nephews; 45 great-nieces and nephews; and 22 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents and brothers, Robert, Richard and L. Stanley Ummel.

He was a 4-H member for 11 years, coming from a family who had been in 4-H for 105 years and four family members were leaders; attended the Beaver Dam School in Kosciusko Co. for 12 years, graduating in 1959; loved the Indy 500 races and time trials and went from 1958-2006 until not able to attend. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed old car and tractor shows and attending the 4-H Fair; loved fishing and watching TV. Mr. Ummel served in the Army in Germany from 1965 – 1966. He worked as an auto mechanic for Ford Motor Company in Rochester for 30 years. Later, he worked at Snipes Feed Mill in Talma until his stroke Feb. 13, 1993.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen where the service will be at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Yellow Creek Cemetery, Goshen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Parkview Hospice, Whitley Branch, 2806 Theater Ave., Suite A, Huntington, Indiana 46750.
