FORT WAYNE — It didn’t take long Wednesday night for junior Wildcat Logan Irwin to seal his spot atop the record books at Whitko High School.
With 6:54 remaining in the first quarter, a baseline jump shot made Irwin the new all-time points leader at Whitko.
According to sources, Irwin had the record Saturday at Churubusco in a 26-point performance against the Eagles.
However, after further review of the records at Whitko High School, Irwin came into Wednesday night one point shy of Steve Nicodemus’s 1,474-point record.
“The only sad part about (breaking the record) is he broke a good friend of mine’s record,” Whitko head coach and father Rob Irwin said. “He (Nicodemus) was a heck of a player. It makes it nice knowing it took  that good of a player to get that.”
Nicodemus set the record back in the 1991 state finalist season at Whitko. As a senior Nicodemus also set the record for most points in a single season hitting 755 points in 1991.
Irwin joined seven other Wildcats in the 1,000-point club at Whitko High School. Teammate and senior Zac VanDeWater stands eight points away after Wednesday night from being the ninth member of that elite club.
Other 1,000-point scorers include: Zach Henson (1,231), Chad Christman (1,153), Jeff Peters (1,151), Mike Kline (1,046), Alex Frantz (1,045) and Jim Juillerat (1,016).
