AT AN INTERSECTION: Commissioners move closer on road project

February 20, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Commissioners discussed a road project at Monday’s meeting.

Due to a high accident rate, it has been proposed to change the intersection of Liberty Mills Road in Allen County and CR 900 S. in Whitley County. The plan is to have Liberty Mills Road cross directly to CR 900 S. Now, drivers going west have to turn right followed by a left turn to get to CR 900 S., rather than going straight across.

The price tag for the project totals over $2.1 million. State funding will cover over $1.7 million of that amount. The remainder will be divided between the counties, with Whitley County paying 20 percent of the bills, or approximately $101,000.

While the commissioners agreed that input from Whitley County was good, they did not want to damage relationships.

The commissioners will continue to discuss the issue at future meetings.

The next meeting of the Whitley County Commissioners will be Monday, March 4 at 1 p.m.
