COLUMBIA CITY — Coesse Elementary School is bringing World War II to life for students and the community.
A 1944 World War II Reconna Jeep, which landed on Normandy Beach one day after the invasion, is on display at the school today and Friday. This jeep was used as a scout vehicle throughout France and Normandy, and is being used as a visual aid for the school’s Veterans Day program Friday.
Both students and community members are invited to visit the display, which will be available today from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and Friday from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. and 2:40 to 4 p.m.
Jon Schmidt, grandson of a World War II veteran and son of a Vietnam-era veteran, is the present owner of this renowned vehicle.
Schmidt’s mission is to share this vehicle with as many public tributes as possible. He has spent the last three years displaying this vehicle, as well as with a large entourage of historical military vehicles and equipment, throughout Northwest Indiana, Chicago and Michigan.
Information about the Huey Helicopter 369 Museum, which is being constructed at the Air Force Complex in Peru, will also be available.
Tom Schmidt, a crew chief of this vehicle in South Korea during the Vietnam-era, is one of the original designers of this building.
He will answer questions about this organization and its mission at the museum as well as the many tributes in which they participate throughout the year.
These gentlemen will be available to veterans, whom are invited to the Coesse Elementary School’s Veterans Day program. The public is also invited to bring their cameras.
