HEUER'S BILL PASSES: Funds now available for job retention, expansion

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Representative Kathy Heuer (R-Columbia City) authored legislation to promote employee retention through the Training 2000 Program. The bill passed through the Senate Monday with a 48-1 vote.

“By making sure that businesses have proper resources to keep employee training up to date, Hoosier businesses will continue to thrive,” said Rep. Heuer. “We need to continue our focus on workforce development in order for our economy to continue to grow.”

The Training 2000 Program and Fund is comprised of the Skills Enhancement Fund, Indiana Specific Insurance Related Education Training Program and Technology Enhancement Certification for Hoosiers Fund. The programs are administered by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) to provide reimbursements for a qualified business’s training costs.

Currently, Training 2000 funds are only available to train new employees or to use in new capital investment. HB 1170 assures the IEDC that they can distribute training assistance funds for retention and upgrading of incumbent employee skills.

“In this economic climate, job retention is just as important as job creation,” said Rep. Heuer. “In building a strong workforce from within our leading Indiana businesses, we hope to create a stable, reliable job climate for our Hoosiers.”
