Helen Helmer, 101

Helen Margaret Helmer, 101, of Columbia City, passed away at 3 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2013, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born on Aug. 9, 1911, in Kendallville, she was the daughter of Howard S. and Martha Mae (Lysher) Wilson.
Helen was raised in Kendallville, and following her marriage to Kenneth E. Helmer Aug. 17, 1929, the two moved to Avilla.
In 1951, they moved to Ligonier, then moved to Columbia City where Helen’s husband became principal of Thorncreek Center School. She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Sorosis Literary Club, Columbia City Homemaker Club and the Ladies Wednesday Luncheon Club.
Surviving relatives include her nephew, Jack Reed of Avilla; great-nephews and nieces, Larry (Janet) Reed of Columbia City, Nancy (Tony) Blomeke and Terri (Wayne) Hasselman, both of Kendallville and Steve (Debbie) Reed of Greensboro, N.C.; and several great-great-nephews and -nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1995 and brother, Raymond (Myrtle) R. Wilson.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City with her funeral services to follow at 7 p.m. Burial will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Kendallville.
Memorial gifts may be given in Mrs. Helmer’s memory to Columbia City United Methodist Church.
