COLUMBIA CITY — Three brothers, originally from Columbia City, reunited last week for a chance to relive some childhood memories.

Jim, Dick and John Walter, affectionately known as “The Walter Boys,” grew up in Columbia City, but life has taken them outside of town. Sitting in the backyard of Dick’s home on West Lincolnway, the threesome shared some of their favorite memories of growing up in the area.

“It’s been two years since we got together,” Dick said. “This is wonderful.”

Dick, 95; Jack, 90 and Jim, 82, may have had age take a toll on some of their physical abilities, but spunk and tenacity still runs deep among the three. Upbringing and hard work are what the three attribute their longevity.

“We were raised right,” said Jack. “We knew how to work and how to live. Mom and Dad gave us two things – a good work ethic and a full head of hair.”

Both Jim and Dick are Purdue University graduates with degrees in mechanical engineering. The brothers served in the U.S. Airforce. Jack suffered from a childhood injury that made him medically ineligible to serve his country.

“I got hit with an arrow in my eye,” Jack said. “I have a glass eye so they wouldn’t let me in the service. I don’t know why. I think I would’ve made a fine soldier.”

Remembering Columbia City from their childhood, Jack said the area was not as industrious.
