COLUMBIA CITY — The win was there for the taking.
“Bottom line, we just didn’t get that fourth score,” Columbia City head coach Jim Thompson said.
With two season-low scores of 44 and a 47 in the clubhouse, the Lady Eagles needed only one more score to pull off their second Northeast Hoosier Conference win of the season over Homestead.
What Columbia City got was a bit more than what they expected. Scores of 56 and 58 weren’t enough to hold off the visiting Spartans at Eagle Glen Golf Course.
Homestead rallied from a two-stroke deficit to win 187-191 with a fourth score of 50.
“We were there,” Thompson noted. “We definitely had a chance to pull it off. We had three really good scores. We just needed that one additional score.”
Despite a season low for nine holes, Columbia City’s 191 wasn’t enough to topple a Homestead team that handed state ranked East Noble its first dual meet loss of the season earlier in the week.
The Lady Eagles got some of its lowest scores of the season at the right time. No. 1 Rachel Hazelet had her best nine holes of the season so far, despite taking an eight on her card. Hazelet tied with junior Lauren Holloway for a low round of 44.
“It’s very encouraging to see from her,” Thompson commented about the No. 1 golfer. “To have an eight on your card and have a 44 was good to see. She didn’t let that eight bother her obviously.”
Olivia Western gave Columbia City a third score under 50. Western comes off back-to-back medalist rounds with a 47 Thursday.
Columbia City suffers its first conference loss falling to 2-2 (1-1). Other varsity scores were: Megan Yoder 56, McKenzie Smith 58.
“I’m pleased with a 191 but when you get to that point you want a little more,” Thompson said. “We got off to a good start and there are encouraging things to take from tonight.”
The Columbia City junior varsity posted a 221-234 win.
The junior varsity scores included: Jackie Leeuw 48, Allison Yoder 53, Deanna Beckner 60, Jackie Bullard 60, Katie Walter, Jessica Klemm 65, Sarah Fahl 75.
