WHITLEY COUNTY — The Leatherneck Coffee Club — whose membership consists of those from Whitley County who served in the U.S. Marine Corps — decorated the graves of former club members with flags for Memorial Day, followed by a brief prayer and a salute this week.
Ron Egolf became a Marine after his older brother, Rodger, serving in Vietnam, was killed on Hill 55, 12 miles southwest of Da Nang. Rodger was 20 years old.
“I never knew him as a man,” Egolf said Thursday at his brother’s grave in South Park cemetery in Columbia City. He was eight years younger than Rodger.
Another veteran honored was Tom Fahl, also a Vietnam veteran, who died in 2005.
