FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Whitko playing for championship

October 17, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s football team had its five-game winning streak snapped last week against Rochester.

Even worse for the 5-3 Wildcats, their loss to the Zebras was their first to a Three Rivers Conference opponent.

This week, though, Whitko still has much to play for when it takes the field. The Wildcats can put the 26-9 loss to the Zebras in the rearview mirror and focus on visiting Tippecanoe Valley.

The winner of the game between the Wildcats and Vikings will get at least a share of the TRC championship, and possibly more.

Both squads enter with just one TRC loss on the year. The winner will earn at least a tie for the conference championship, and can win it outright if Rochester also loses this week to North Miami.

If Tippy Valley wins, it will be its third straight conference title. The Vikings shared it in 2011 and 2012 with Rochester as well.

Whitko was last conference champion in 2010, and the last school to win the TRC outright, as the Wildcats posted a perfect 7-0 league record that year.

It was Tippecanoe Valley over Whitko in a big way last year when the two teams played, as the Vikings walked out with a 55-14 victory.
