Flying ducks to benefit cancer patients

October 12, 2010

Inebriation can sometimes lead to visions of pink elephants and flying pigs.
But the pink ducks flying through the air at the CCHS gym Wednesday night are real and have nothing to do with too much to drink.
After all, the chuck a duck contest is just part of the CCHS volleyball team’s Dig for Cure night.
The volleyball team, in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, has a series of fundraisers taking place at their match Wednesday with all proceeds helping to provide cancer services for Whitley County residents.
There is the chuck a duck event in which contestants can buy one duck for $3 or two ducks for $5. Throwing the ducks will give the participants a chance to win gift cards to local businesses. Participants can also buy the ducks and designate someone to throw for them.
A pink volleyball will also be raffled off and there is also a silent auction with a variety of items including:
• one of the beautiful cancer bracelets designed and made by the six seniors on the team;
• a Tupperware assortment;
• a “PINK” candle, and
• an assortment of hair care products
While the odds of any one of the members of the girls volleyball team getting cancer in the next year are pretty low, over the course of a lifetime, the odds of any woman, including those on the volleyball team stand at one in eight.
Through Dig for a Cure, the volleyball team is hoping to raise awareness of breast cancer and asking the community to help them support cancer patients and honor cancer survivors, and maybe those odds will decrease for all women.
The evening begins with the C-team match beginning at 5:15 p.m. Admission tickets for the night are $5.
