Family fun found at Squawbuck Days

August 24, 2010

This Ford Falcon looks as if it made a stop at a drive-in on its way to the Squawbuck Days car show last year. The car show returns with registration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and awards at 2:30 p.m.

If you’re looking for family entertainment this weekend, travel no farther than Larwill.
The 156th annual Squawbuck Days festival kicks off Friday night, but the bulk of the activities take place Saturday.
Squawbuck is the name that early settlers used when referring to Chief Mes-qua-buck, a Potawatomi Indian whose village and home was near Oswego, located in what is now Kosciusko County, according to the Squawbuck Days guide.
Now the festival named in his honor is used to help give residents a chance to renew old acquaintances and enjoy Larwill’s past and present.
The festival is filled with events that are designed to help those who attend enjoy a small-town family experience.
There are meals, a tenderloin fry on Friday night, a ham and bean lunch on Saturday and a carry-in dinner after a community church service on Sunday.
There are games for children, including a kiddie tractor pull at 10 a.m. followed by other games from 1 to 3 p.m., a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m.
For the whole family there is a car show that begins at noon, a miniature horse pull at 2:30 p.m. and a family night of square dance and karaoke from 6 to 9 p.m.
The horse pull is a new event this year and will take place near the fire station, as do most of the other events.
Other events include bingo on Friday night, a craft sale, flea market and garage sales all day Saturday and a walk-through of mementos of Larwill’s rich history that opens at 7 a.m. Saturday.
