CHURUBUSCO â€” Though Churubusco opened its boys basketball season with a loss, the Eagles showed a vast improvement from last seasonâ€™s opener against Adams Central.
Last year, Churubusco fell 51-34, the first of its nine-game losing streak to start this season. This year, Adams Central squeaked out the win with an overtime, 3-point, buzzer-beater, winning 58-56.
Eagle Brent Simmons stepped up the the free-throw line with 10 seconds left and â€™Busco down two points.
After sinking the first free throw, he missed the second, but grabbed his own rebound and scored, giving the Eagles the lead, temporarily, at 56-55.
Adams Central rushed down for the last shot, and Flying Jet Blade Kable sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to steal back the lead, and the win, 58-56.
Kable ended the game with 13 points, including 3-for-6 3-point shooting.
Churubusco had the lead at the end of every quarter leading up to the fourth.
The Eagles had a 12-11 advantage at the end of the first, 22-18 lead at halftime, and 34-32 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at 45 at the end of regulation.
Churubuscoâ€™s leading scorer and rebounder was Brent Simmons, who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Eagle Blake Gross contributed 11 points, along with an assist and steal.
Beau Barkley led the team in steals with two. Barkley had six points and four rebounds.
The Eagles take a week off before traveling to Westview next Friday. The Warriors easily handled Bethany Christian Tuesday, 65-35, to open the season 1-0.
Last year, Westview beat Churubusco 87-26, and 47-31 the year before.View more articles in:
