COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s senior wrestlers competed in the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium for the last time of their high school careers Wednesday night. The Eagles hosted DeKalb and lost, 46-27.

“I’m really proud of how well the guys competed tonight,” Columbia City Head Coach Blane Culp said. “We were questioning if we were even going to win a match tonight.”

Recently, the Eagles lost 60-10 to East Noble. DeKalb beat East Noble, leaving coaches, players and fans with expectations of a blow-out. The Barons opened the meet with a pin over Columbia City’s Damon Blackburn in the 132-pound weight class, but Kyle Burns answered with a pin in the 138 class to make the score 6-6.

Burns was one of two freshman to beat a senior opponent. He, along with Tristan Anglin beat veteran opponents.

“Once they got confidence, it was lights out,” Culp said. “You could see it in their face.”

DeKalb’s Connor Brummett won the 145 class by an 8-6 decision over Alan Trabert in overtime, followed by two more decision wins over Landon Hodges and Eric Shepperd to extend its lead to 22-6 with six of the 12 matches over.

Eagle Russell Hazelet won by a 5-4 decision to spark a 15-6 rally late in the meet, but it wasn’t enough for the win, as Michael Wright and Kyle Egolf were pinned after a forfiet in the 106 class to mount an 18-0 run for the Barons.

Bryce Forester finished the last match of the night and his last match at Columbia City with a pin over DeKalb’s Logan Williams with 54.5 left in the first period.

“Our seniors did well. Shepperd didn’t have the match he wanted, but he was against a tough kid. Ricky came out and wrestled hard. Alex Hart got a 30-second pin-fall in the JV match and I think he surprised everyone with that,” Culp said. “Joe Fahl has been on a hot streak lately.”

Fahl won with a second-period pin in the heavyweight class. The Eagles are back in action this weekend at the Goshen Invitational.
