HUNTINGTON — Columbia City’s boys track team opened its season with a win at Huntington North Wednesday.

Senior Matt Rethlake, in his first high school track meet, won the 100-meter dash, long jump and high jump.

He was also on the 400-meter relay team with Zach Pequignot, Sam Dailey and Wayne Smith, which placed second. Smith won the 200-meter dash.

The other “Smith” on Columbia City’s team, Cole Smith, also had a stand-out performance, winning the 400 dash, placing second in the long jump behind Rethlake and contributing to the winning 1600-meter relay team along with Seth Kissinger, Lucas Hahn and Alex Fritz.

Hahn won both hurdle events and the pole vault, winning all four events he participated in. Fritz placed first in the 800-meter run.

Adam Bernhard and Evan Harney controlled the distance events, taking the top two spots in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

Ben Fausey led the Eagles in the throwing events with a second-place finish in the Discus and Garrett Vandersaul came in fifth in the shot put.

The boys team joins the girls tonight at South Side for a three-way meet with Concordia.
