COLUMBIA CITY — Out of 10 senior girls, only one could be declared Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) of Whitley County for 2014.
That one was Hannah Schaefer, a Columbia City High School student.
“Wow! This is so unexpected,” Schaefer said. “It’s wonderful, but right now, it’s overwhelming.”
Schaefer is the daughter of Mark and Mary Ann Schaefer. In addition to her designation as DYW, Schaefer also earned the award in both the Talent category and in Self Expression.
“We were surprised,” Mary Ann said of her daughter’s accomplishment. “I knew eight out of the 10 girls. We would have been happy with anyone of them winning. They are all awesome.”
Taking first runner up was Kiersten Thomas, a CCHS senior. Thomas, the daughter of Micah and Michelle Thomas, also earned the award in the Scholastics category.
Second runner up went to Shelby Smiley. The daughter of Brent and Laura Smiley, she attends Whitko High School.
Carley Porter, a CCHS student and daughter of Todd and Denise Porter, took home three awards.
