Dwenger converts free throws to beat Col. City

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls basketball team fell to Bishop Dwenger Tuesday night in a contest that was largely decided at the free-throw line.

The Lady Eagles were 8-for-12 from the charity stripe as a team in the 46-41 loss, but the Saints were 25-for-32, including a crucial 8-for-8 second quarter, when Dwenger took the lead for good. The trips to the line marred an otherwise good defensive effort by Columbia City.

The defeat dropped the Eagles to 2-4 on the year.

“We have a problem with not maintaining intensity for four quarters of the basketball game,” she said. “And tonight we did not bring it in the first half and we ended up losing the basketball game.”

Senior Ally Christman led the Saint offense with 15 points, including a 13-for-16 effort at the free-throw line. Sophomore Macie Hinen led the Eagles with 15 points as well, highlighted by a 6-for-10 performance from the field. Hinen also helped lead the defensive charge with three steals.

Going forward, Shearer said the team will have to work on its offensive performance in future contests.

“Our offense was pretty stagnant,” she said. “We had poor decisions on passing. Our offense was just not clicking this evening. “
