'DUMB CRIME': Thornsbearry receives sentence for 'dumbest thing she’s ever done'

August 23, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY— A Columbia City woman received an eight-year sentence for a crime her own attorney referred to as “stupid.”

Krystal Thornsbearry was ordered to serve four years of her eight-year sentence at the Whitley County Jail for dealing a Schedule I, II or III controlled substance.

Thornsbearry’s attorney, Brad Voelz, said his client had several positive traits to offer society.

“Krstyal has no drug history and has a good employment history,” he said. “She said this was the dumbest thing she’s ever done. I agree, it was dumb.”

Voelz explained Thornsbearry was friends with someone who worked as an informant for the Whitley County Drug Task Force. As an informant, this friend, Savannah Hartman, was required to make a certain number of controlled drug buys per month.

In an effort to assist, Thornsbearry agreed to sell some prescription drugs to a third person.

“Krystal was trying to help a friend,” Voelz said. “For something she has never done before or since, she is a very low risk to re-offend.”

Whitley County Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said it was a “silly” crime, but that did not excuse the magnitude of the offense.
