Douglas Lewis, 65
Douglas E. Lewis, 65, of rural Columbia City, passed away quietly at home, surrounded by his loving family at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. He had been battling cancer.He was born Feb. 24, 1948 in Huntington, a son of the late Bob E. and Doris Jean (Bitzer) Lewis. He was raised in Huntington attending Horace Mann Elementary School and graduating from Huntington High School in 1966. He completed his apprenticeship to become a journeyman tool and die maker in Fort Wayne.On Feb. 7, 1970, he was united in marriage to Susan R. Scarbrough. They made their home in Huntington. In 1989 they moved to rural Columbia City.He started his career at Navistar –(International Harvester) working in the engineering department of the Scout line. In 1987, he was employed by Dana – Spicer Axle as a tool and die maker and specialized in machine repair. A skilled craftsman, he applied his talents to his home, adding and remodeling. An avid outdoorsman, he loved nature and especially the Colorado Rockies. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Association, and loved to hunt and fly fish. In the spring of the year, he loved making maple syrup with his friends on a neighboring property.He was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, the Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers International Union and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue; four daughters, Katherine Lewis, Austin, Texas, Amy (Brad) Matchett, Columbia City, Anissa Lewis, Austin, Texas and Amanda Lewis, Columbia City; two grandchildren, Robert Maxmillian Turk and Ingrid Matchett and three sisters, Charlotte Lewis, Mesa, Ariz., Christine (William) Wilson, Phoenix, and Beth (Michael) Walker, Bayfield, Colo.The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Father Gary Sigler the officiant.
