CHURUBUSCO â€” Eighteen people, including two local residents, were arrested Saturday night after police were tipped off to a dog-fighting contest.
On Friday, Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department detectives were tipped off to the contest, that scheduled to take place Saturday night at Eddie Smithâ€™s home at 906 E. Ind. 205 in Churubusco.
The investigation led to a search warrant, and at approximately 11 p.m., officers from the Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department and Indiana State Police raided the home, taking 18 people and three dogs into custody.
An injured, bloody pitbull was found inside inside a fighting ring that was located in the garage.
Police say two more dogs were found inside the home, including another bloodied pit bull. All three dogs were taken to the Whitley County Humane Shelter.
Smith was charged with animal neglect, resisting law enforcement, possession of paraphernalia and resisting law enforcement and is being held at the Whitley County Jail. Robert Stouder, 39, Churubusco, was the only other Whitley County person arrested.
One female was booked in the case, Bambi Sue Langon, 46, Three Rivers, Mich. The rest of the suspects were black males, charged with attending a dog fighting contest, a Class A Misdemeanor, with a $4,000 bond.
The suspects include: Marco C. Sole, 39, Chicago; Alvegas R. Nelson, 31, Joilet, Ill.; Donaver L. Jones, 42, Gary; Darrell G. Thames, 50, Three Rivers, Mich.; Marlin L. Mitchell, 46, Matteson, Ill.; Rudolph H. Allen, 53, Chicago; Mack A. Tucker, 41, Chicago; Excell L. Hazzard, 44, Chicago; John L. Patrick, 29, Joliet, Ill.; Chante L. Houlden, 33, Harvey, Ill.; Cortez A. Flowers, 37, East Chicago; Kordi S. Williams, 41, Joilet, Ill.; John J. Abram, 32, Lansing, Ill. and Alden C. Parsons, 80, Evanston, Ill.
The first court appearance will be Jan. 2, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. The case remains under investigation and additional charges are pending.
