Dennis Crampton, 64, formerly of Columbia City, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 in San Diego.
He was born in Fort Wayne Sept. 14, 1947.
He grew up in the Tri-Lakes area near Columbia City and enjoyed swimming, boating, fishing, baseball, and track.
He graduated high school at Columbia City Joint High School in 1965, and from Purdue University in 1971 with a degree in electrical engineering.
He then went into the U.S. Navy. Dennis was stationed on the USS Dubuque for four years during the Vietnam War and was on three West Pac (Western Pacific) tours where he engaged in mine sweeping and the evacuation of refugees.
Dennis met his wife Frances in 1972 at the USO in San Diego. They were married in July, 1975 and have one child, Larry who lives in San Marcos, Calif.
After the Navy, Dennis worked on aircraft systems and reconnaissance cameras and traveled frequently to Germany, Washington D.C. and military bases.
Dennis loved to attend San Diego Padres baseball games, watch football, play golf, and travel with his family.
His final resting place will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Frances, son Larry, brothers, Michael Crampton and Ken Crampton, and sisters, Treasa Crampton and Noreen Kemery.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6, 2012, at the Tri-Lakes Baptist Church.
