COLUMBIA CITY — Thieves used Sunday night’s fog to their advantage, stealing from and rummaging through at least nine properties, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.
Most of the homes affected were on Colony and Crescent Avenues in the Tri-Lakes area.
Many items were stolen, including a motorcycle.
The thieves didn’t get far with the bike, though, as it didn’t have any oil in it, causing the engine to seize by the time it got to the Lions Club, located less than a half-mile from where the thefts occurred on Colony Avenue.
Police believe the suspects only went into one home, and the rest of the items were taken from garages and vehicles.
Whitley County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Marcus Gatton said many of the thefts were crimes of opportunity.
“Most of the items stolen were taken from unlocked cars and garages,” Gatton said. “I cannot stress enough — keep your doors locked and keep valuable items out of plain sight.”
