COX STEPPING DOWN: Bids farewell to Col. City

June 19, 2014

Columbia City Softball Head Coach Steve Cox (left) and his wife Jeanne spent 20 years with the Lady Eagles’ program. Cox recently announced that he will be stepping down as head coach so he can spend more time with his grandchildren.

COLUMBIA CITY — Just as the measure of any teacher is not reflected in any set of test scores, the measure of a coach is not reflected in any won-loss ledger —his place in history lies in the hearts and minds of the players that he has coached, and the assistants that he has worked with.

Columbia City Softball Head Coach Steve Cox ended a 20-year coaching career with the Lady Eagles Wednesday night at the CCHS auditorium.
The former players and assistant coaches were universal in their appraisal of Cox.

All lauded Cox for his kind and giving nature. Virtually, all said they felt that they were part of Cox’s family.

After five years as an assistant coach to Lynn Workman, Cox took over the reins of the Lady Eagle program. For the past 15 years Cox has led the Lady Eagles to a position of prominence among the programs of Northeast Indiana.

Over the span of his tenure as coach, Cox compiled 277 wins for a 67.7 percent winning percentage. During that time period, the Lady Eagles claimed six conference championships with Cox winning Northeast Hoosier Conference Coach of the Year honors on three separate occasions.

In 2004, he was named District Two Coach of the Year and was an Assistant Coach at the 2004 All-Star Game.
