SEXUAL MISCONDUCT: Wilkinson to serve time on home detention

November 14, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY— A Columbia City man was given a sentence to be served on home detention for sexual misconduct with a minor.

Chais Wilkinson, 19, pleaded guilty to the charge, a Class D felony, in October. When reading the charge at that time, Wilkinson admitted to performing or submitting to fondling a 14-year-old female victim.

Monday, Judge James Heuer sentenced him to the Whitley County Jail for 1.5 years. Wilkinson was given credit for time served at the jail.

He will spend 180 days on home detention, with the rest of his sentence spent on probation.

Sex offenders normally have specific, additional probation rules. Heuer said Wilkinson would not have to abide by those.

“I see no evidence that he is likely to reoffend,” Heuer said.

Wilkinson’s attorney, Brad Baber, said the experience has changed his client.

“First and foremost, Chais is very remorseful in what he has done,” Baber said of the tearful Wilkinson. “As he sits here in court today, it is obvious he is sorry for what he has done.”

The victim’s father was called to the stand to testify. He said that he hoped Wilkinson could be charged with just a misdemeanor instead of a felony.
