IN COURT: Nimtz crime shocks community

March 28, 2014

COLUMBIA CITY — A crime that shocked the Columbia City and Whitley County communities last summer will soon be brought to a close.

Dustin A. Nimtz, 19, of Columbia City, broke into a Park Terrace Heights Apartment in late June of 2013. While inside, he forced a 14-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him while he held a knife to her throat. The victim’s throat was then “stabbed” during the attack.

Last week, Nimtz pleaded guilty in Whitley County Circuit Court to all of the charges against him — burglary, criminal deviate conduct, child molesting, attempted rape, intimidation and strangulation.

He will be sentenced April 29. The range for his sentence will be 20 to 50 years in prison.

Whitley County Prosecutor Matt Rentschler said Nimtz and the victim did not know one another, even though they both lived in the same apartment complex.
