COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT: Lowest in 4 years

November 23, 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Unemployment numbers for October are in — with Whitley County seeing a new low of 6.8 percent.

“This is pretty significant,” said Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) President Alan Tio. “From what I understand, this is the lowest we’ve seen in nearly four years.”

According to the EDC, employment for Whitley County was down 7.6 percent in September of this year, making a difference of nearly one percent.

“A one percent difference is a couple hundred people,” said Tio.

“In 2008, unemployment was below five percent, but we’re making some progress,” he said.

For October, the labor force in Whitley County for October totaled 17,933 — with 16,720 employed and 1,213 unemployed.
