Editor’s note: The following is the fourth of a four-part series on Columbia City’s football team
COLUMBIA CITY — One might wonder if anything could have been done to prevent the onslaught of injuries the Columbia City football team suffered in 2012.
“Sometimes it’s just a freak-type injury,” said head coach Randy Hudgins. “You’re not really sure you can prevent that, especially with bone breaks and concussions.”
In regards to seasons to come, Hudgins said concentrated steps have already been taken to lessen the likelihood of players injuring themselves.
If being minor, small town celebrities wasn’t enough, several stand-out Columbia City football players were lauded by regional and statewide organizations for their performances on the field and in the classroom in 2012.
In the six games Jared Murphy played, he still managed to display the talent that had caught the attention of Miami of Ohio. It also earned him accolades at several positions. As a wide receiver, he made 1st-Team All-NHC and the Indiana Football Coaches Association’s Top 50 All-State. For his prowess as a defensive back, he made 1st-Team All-Northeast Indiana and the Associated Press’ Honorable Mention 4A All-State. For his performance on special teams, he was awarded Honorable Mention All-NHC.
Murphy caught 23 passes for 373 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned five punts for 127 yards and nine kicks for 200 yards. On defense, Murphy made 28 tackles and one interception.
Garrett Vandersaul played on both offensive and defensive lines. He was one of five Eagles to earn IFCA Academic All-State recognition. Other awards Vandersaul earned include 1st-Team All-NHC, 2nd-Team All-Northeast Indiana, AP’s Honorable Mention 4A All-State, and IFCA’s 4A All-State.
On defense, Vandersaul made 44 tackles, eight for a loss, while leading the team in sacks with five.
