That was the challenge facing both Columbia City and Whitko tennis teams when the two Whitley County rivals squared off Monday on the Whitko courts. A veteran Columbia City team took a 5-0 win over the Wildcats, limiting the hosts to five games total.
In the No. 1 singles contest, Columbia City senior Dylan Hinen claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Whitko senior Alex Winger. At the No. 2 singles slot Columbia City junior Gabe Boles took a 6-0, 6-3 win over Whitko freshman Tyler Baugher.
The No. 3 singles match ended in similar fashion as Whitko senior Nathan Sherrard fell to Columbia City sophomore Derek Hinen 6-0 in the first set and a 6-1 count in the second.
Columbia City’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Alan Murphy and J.T. Biggs continued the winning streak, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Whitko team of senior Thomas Danner and sophomore Tyler Pottenger.
The Eagles No. 2 doubles tandem of Travis Johnson and Cole Craven completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wildcats Seth Patrick and Avery Robbins.
“Whitko is pretty young and they are rebuilding their program,” noted Columbia City coach Doug Stoffel. “We have been there before, also. So tonight became more about us trying to play our game and not make any silly mistakes.
“Tomorrow night we have a real tough match against Bethany Christian, and we sort of want to use tonight as a springboard toward that match.”
The win moves the Eagles record to 2-1 on the season going into tonight’s home match with Bethany Christian.
