Col. City wins Lady Eagle softball battle

April 27, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — They survived.

More than once Columbia City’s Lady Eagles’ softball team had a big inning against Churubusco, only to have the visitors respond. Columbia City emerged victorious though Friday with a 9-8 win.

The winning run came on a wild pitch. Hannah Schnorr of Columbia City was on third waiting and raced across the plate in the bottom of the sixth for the deciding score.

“I told Schnorr be ready, we’ve got to score,” said Columbia City Softball Head Coach Steve Cox.

It was ‘Busco that drew first blood though. A two-run first inning put the vistors ahead of their county rival in the early going. Kasey Gibson and Chandler Blake both crossed the plate to give ‘Busco a 2-0 edge.

The hosts struck back to tie it in the bottom of the second. Krystin VanHouten and Alyssa Hansen both came in to knot the score. Columbia City’s big inning came in the third. A serious of walks, coupled with a two-run double from Laurisha Rehrer brought the hosts to a 6-2 lead.

Churubusco made a substitution that made a difference, though. Courtney Luttman came in to pitch in the third inning, but it was at the plate where she did her damage. Luttman hit a two-run homer the top of the fourth to bring the visitors that much closer. The damage would have been worse for Columbia City, but Rehrer, playing in right field, snagged a long fly ball that would have resulted in more ‘Busco runs had it dropped. That play ended the inning.
