COLUMBIA CITY — A very young Columbia City Eagle wrestling squad kicked off its 2012-13 season Tuesday night with one of only three home meets.
The Eagles hosted perennial Northeast Hoosier Conference powerhouse Bel-lmont.
Columbia City fell behind early, but ran off a string of three straight wins.
Despite the run, the Eagles still fell to the Braves by a 51-19 score.
Columbia City fielded a lineup that included five freshmen who saw their first high school varsity experience.
“All of our freshman are extremely talented,” said Eagle Head Coach Blane Culp. “They’re inexperienced as far as high school is concerned, but they have been wrestling for a long time. This is one of our better freshman classes, and as long as we can hang onto them in four years this could be a very special team.”
Fundraiser: Tuesday night also marked the launch of the “CCHS Wrestling For a Cause” fundraising effort by the Eagle wrestlers.
Each of the Eagle team members and coaches have chosen a type of cancer that they will be supporting.
Each team member has a specially designed T-shirt showing a ribbon representing their cancer awareness choice. Those T-shirts will be offered in a silent auction that will run through Jan. 16. All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they travel to the Wawasee Invitational Tournament.View more articles in:
