COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City junor varsity football team played host to its Carroll counterparts Saturday. The visiting Chargers built up a big lead before the Eagles got on the scoreboard late, giving Carroll a 32-6 win.
For the Eagles, the game started off badly as a botched reception of the opening kickoff led to the visitors tackling Columbia City quarterback Blake Sunderland in the end zone for a safety on the first play of the game to stake the Chargers to a 2-0 lead after just nine seconds of play.
The Chargers hit the end zone again at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass. The completion gave Carroll a 9-0 lead. The Chargers added points at the 4:08 mark of the first quarter.
This score came by virtue of a 24-yard field goal that sent the visitors into halftime with a 12-0 lead.
In the third quarter, the Chargers scored on a quarterback keeper around the left side of the Eagle defense.
The play covered 56 yards and put the Chargers up 19-0.
