COLUMBIA CITY — Thursday afternoon was cold and blustery, but at least it wasn’t raining, and the Columbia City Eagle baseball team took advantage of the break in the weather to take a dramatic, come-from-behind Northeast Hoosier Conference win 8-7 over the visiting Homestead Spartans.

“We finally had a decent day where we could play some baseball,” said Eagle Head Coach Zac Bireley, “So that’s a plus.”

Columbia City weathered a rough start to take a 4-0 lead only to see the Spartans come back to take a 7-5 lead at the end of four innings. A three-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of the Eagles’ Ryan Kerschner gave the Eagles the 8-7 win.

Eagle starting pitcher Jordan Bickle pitched his way out of a rough first inning as the Spartans loaded the bases on a single and two walks with the first three batters. Bickle pitched his way out getting an infield force-out at home and two strikeouts to end the Spartans’ first at bat without a run.

The Eagles also threatened, with Bickle reaching safely on a dropped third strike that got away from the Homestead catcher. Bickle would make it to third on a steal after Kerschner drew a walk, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize, and the first inning ended scoreless.
