Coaching change-ups becoming a trend in football
COLUMBIA CITY — With the retiring of Churubusco’s Lee Etzler and Whitko’s Wayne Swender this season, at age 31 Randy Hudgins is most veteran football coach in Whitley County — a concept that seems almost unimaginable in a sport that formerly relied on tradition and consistency.
“Unfortunately it is kind of a trend now — there are quite a bit of coaching changes,” Hudgins said.
Hudgins (25-20) is prepping for the start of his fifth season with the Eagles.
“It’s kind of odd,” Hudgins said. “When I coached my first game here I was 26 and there were two veteran coaches with Lee and Wayne.”
Etzler stepped down after 11 years as ’Busco’s head coach. He told the media when he announced his retirement that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
Swender was a five-year coach for Whitko.
