City closes out NHC with 26-6 win

October 13, 2012

OSSIAN — Friday night the Columbia City Eagle football squad wrapped up its regular season with a trip to Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent Norwell.

A review of the game reads like the mixed coverage of a movie blockbuster ... “A bang-up start, with a satisfying ending, but a little slow in the middle,” as the Eagles used big plays early and late to post a 26-6 win over the host Knights.

The Eagles started the game with a bang, executing a pop-up onside kick by Jose Perez that was recovered by Columbia City’s Wayne Smith on the Norwell 38-yard line.

Columbia City stuck to the ground game with Sam Dailey reeling off a 15-yard run and quarterback Travis Herbst capped the drive with a 5-yard dash to put the Eagles up 7-0 at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter.

The Eagles went back to the well again with Perez popping the ensuing kick-off up again, and again the Eagles recovered.

Columbia City moved to the Norwell 27-yard line but fumbled the ball down to the 14-yard line where the Knights recovered.

“We looked at this game as the end of one season, and now we start the second season which is a one game playoff each week,” said Eagle Head Coach Randy Hudgins.
The Eagles will host the Leo Lions in the opening round of IHSAA Sectional play next Friday.
