DENVER — The holidays have been good to Whitko basketball. Thursday it has the chance to get even better.
Wednesday, Whitko boys’ and girls’ basketball teams used a win in the first day of the Miami County Tournament to advance to the championship game.
For the second time this season, the Lady Wildcats (6-6) used a lopsided victory over host North Miami.    After winning 72-31 on Dec. 4, Whitko beat the Lady Warriors 60-35 Wednesday.
The win puts Whitko in the girls’ championship game 6 p.m. today against Peru (5-6). The match-up is a rematch of last season’s title game where the Lady Tigers won handily 72-50.
The Tigers advanced by beating Maconoquah 56-31.
If one Peru-Whitko title bout wasn’t enough, the boys’ final of the Miami County tournament will also feature the two schools.
The Wildcats (7-1) extended their winning streak to seven games with a 62-51 win over Maconoquah (6-1).
Whitko used a game-high 22 points by Logan Irwin to hand the Braves their first loss of the season. Whitko  used the perimeter to pull away from Maconoquah. The ’Cats hit six three-pointers including three from Irwin.
By halftime, the Wildcats led 32-25 with three players in double figures. Alex Stoddard followed Irwin with 11 of his 13 points coming in the second half.
Senior Zac VanDeWater came in with 12 points as Whitko pulled away in the third quarter outscoring Maconoquah 19-7.
Tonight’s 8 p.m. championship game pits two state ranked teams. The No. 9 Wildcats go against class 3A’s No. 1 team in Peru (7-0).
The Whitko boys’ junior varsity team lost a close contest against Maconoquah Wednesday 49-46. The JV Wildcats play in the consolition round today at 12:30 p.m.
