Chamber director lectures on business for Rotary

September 7, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Vince Buchanan, executive director of the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana, spoke recently with the Columbia City Rotary Club.

The regional chamber is a membership-based organization that acts as a resource for all of the Chamber of Commerce offices in Northeast Indiana.

Ten counties in the corner of the state are represented by this regional office. Their central office is located on the southwest side of Ft. Wayne, on Pointe Inverness Way.

Buchanan was introduced by Doug Brown, director of the local Columbia City Chamber of Commerce. This regional center, representing several small-town chambers, considers one of its main functions to be getting the government out of the way of business growth.

Buchanan emphasized that so many of society’s problems can be traced down to the individual and the presence or absence of what they consider to be a quality job.

“If a person has the job they want, everything flows from there,” he said. “That includes stimulating spending, elevation of the living standard, growth of businesses and subsequently more jobs being produced.”

It follows from there that the mission of this Regional Chamber is to promote an environment in which individuals, businesses and communities thrive in a global economy. “This is what we do,” he said.

Buchanan and the small staff he works with consists of one registered lobbyist, Tony Mitson, who is the Regional Chamber’s director of governmental affairs, and Kacey Miller, the administrative assistant and director of member services and operations. Together, they work to make the individual efforts of the local chambers more efficient and effective at promoting their cities and towns.

When asked about the average income in the area declining, Buchanan said that decline has finally stopped, and the region is now starting to see a slow rise back to normal.
