COLUMBIA CITY â In July of 2012, Cindy Baker presented her plans for the United Way of Whitley County at the nonprofitâs Annual Celebration of Giving.
At that time, she was new to her role as executive director. Fast forward a year to the 2013 annual breakfast â Baker celebrated a long list of accomplishments for her first year with the United Way Tuesday.
âIt really isnât about me. I am just one person,â Baker said. âIt really is about all of you who have helped the United Way be successful.â
Each year, the nonprofitâs annual fundraiser generates monies that are then spread among several organizations within the county.
For the 2012 campaign, the United Way exceeded its goal of $190,000, raising a total of $205,385.
âFor me itâs not about the money,â Baker said. âItâs about what we can do for the community. The amount of money each of us could give individually is multiplied when given to the United Way.â
When setting the 2012 goal, Baker set the mark $30,000 higher than the year before. It seemed like a âloftyâ goal at the time, but Baker had faith in the county.
