CCHS FLOOD PREVENTION: Board mulls sewer options

May 8, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — To renovate or not to renovate?

That was the question for the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees (WCCS) Monday. Business Manager Tony Zickgraf shared with the board the bidding information he had received to do work on the storm sewer at Columbia City High School (CCHS). There were a couple of problems, however.

The first problem was that only one bid came into the district. Zickgraf said some companies he expected to put in a bid did not, for various reasons. Although no action was taken Monday, Zickgraf sought the wisdom of the board in charting a future course.

One reason one company could not was an inability to complete the project by the start of football season this fall, which was a desired goal of the district. With a bid price of approximately $348,000 and only one bid, Zickgraf asked the question, “What should we do?”

Options before the board were to do nothing. The last time there was a flood at the high school, the price tag to fix it was approximately $500,000. Zickgraf observed though that the building has endured heavy rains.

“We did survive the four to five inches of rain last month,” he said. “We had no water problems at all.”

Ultimately, Zickgraf was asking the board if the members felt it was worth it to do renovation work at Columbia City High School in light of the discussions of a new high school for the district.
