Catherine Beerman Avery, 88, a resident of Churubusco and widow of William J. Avery, Jr., passed away at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.
Mrs. Avery was born in Fort Wayne on April 21, 1923, a daughter of William H.F. and Margaret C. (Voetter) Beerman.
She spent her early years in Fort Wayne, graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1941, and during World War II worked in civil service.
On Feb. 25, 1943, she was married in Fort Wayne to William J. Avery, Jr.
Employed as a bookkeeper for the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center, she retired from there in 1988 after 15 years.
Mrs. Avery was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco.
Mr. Avery preceded her in death unexpectedly on April 20, 1968.
The surviving relatives include her daughter, Becki (Chuck) Mathieu of Churubusco; a son, Kevin J. Avery of Churubusco; and a daughter-in-law Aldina â€śDeeâ€ť Avery of Fort Wayne. There are eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark S. Avery on Aug. 11, 1996; by three sisters Wilma Haag, Margaret Mennewisch, and Eleanor Cates; and by a grandson Shane T. Avery.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ege Catholic Cemetery in Noble County, with Father Danney Pinto, pastor of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow.
At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours.
