CAR VS. PEDESTRIAN: Six-year-old struck by car in city

COLUMBIA CITY — A six-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries Monday night after she was struck by a car. According to police, the girl was walking home from her neighbor’s house on W. Ellsworth Street in Columbia City at approximately 5:45 p.m. The girl was crossing from the south side of the road to her house at 614 W. Ellsworth St. as a car backed out and headed east.

A westbound vehicle didn’t see the girl, who was “just a few steps away from her driveway,” according to Columbia City Police Sergeant Trey Insley.
She was struck by the westbound vehicle, which threw her into the rocky ditch.

The girl was transported to the hospital with a lacerated lung, bruised liver and several lacerations to her head.The crash is under investigation by the Columbia City Police Department. Also assisting on the scene was Columbia City’s Fire Department and Whitley County EMS.
