’Busco jersey auction main event at chili supper

December 27, 2010

CHURUBUSCO — Hey, give five, five-five dollars, ten now twenty, sold.
The bidding war is stirring back up for Churubusco baseball with its annual chili supper that provides Eagles family and fans to take home their own piece of the program’s history.
The third installment of the annual feast takes place before the Jan. 7 Churubusco boys’ home basketball  game. Fans enjoy the taste of warm chili in the cold winter months while an auction takes place for a piece of ’Busco past baseball glory.
In past auctions, head coach Mark Grove has dug jerseys from both the 1980s and 90s out of the closest and put them up for sale.
The funds from the first auction helped the Eagles purchase new away jerseys along with other equipment improvements for the team.
“It’s one of those things where we don’t have to go knock on the athletic director’s door if we need money for something,” Grove said. “This way we can have money set off to the side that if we need to we can get stuff ourselves.”
As he has for the past two auctions, former Eagle baseball player and 1997 Churubusco graduate Justin Gaerte will serve as auctioneer accepting bids for each of the 16 jerseys up for sale.
Worn from 2000 to 2004, the pinstriped jerseys on the auction block saw North East Corner Conference championships in each season including sectional titles in ’03 and ’04.
   Some big names in the Churubusco record books have their numbers in the auction. Numbers included: 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26.
Chili supper will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Cost is $5 and includes chili, apple crisp, drink, bread and butter.
The auction will begin at 5:30 p.m.
