BREAKING NEWS: Chemical fire injures several

July 19, 2013

A chemical fire at C & R Plating in Columbia City has left several people injured.

The fire broke out this afternoon at the plant, located at 302 Factory Avenue, near the intersection of South Line Street.

Columbia City residents have been asked to turn off air conditioners and close windows to avoid breathing in the possibly dangerous chemical smell, according to Whitley County Emergency Management.

Emergency officials sent out a notification at 1:02 p.m. stating that South Street was closed due to the fire.

The chemical involved is sodium hydrosulfide, which is water reactive and has a distinct smell.

Fire crews from Columbia and Thorncreek Townships were called in to help the Columbia City Fire Department.

Some officers were possibly in contact with the chemical. Police scanner traffic reports officers went through decontamination.

Only one injury has been reported.

Those evacuated due to the fire should be able to return to their homes early this evening.

More information will be available as details are released.
