CHURUBUSCO — A wild fifth inning doomed the Churubusco baseball team Thursday.
The visiting Westview Warriors blew open a close ballgame, scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to hand the host Churubusco Eagles a 12-3 loss in a Northeast Corner Conference baseball game Thursday evening.
The host Eagles took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Centerfielder Brent Simmons reached on a two-out single and scored on a double by first baseman Jay Petrie.
That lead held until the top of the third inning when the Warriors pushed across three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Westview catcher Kole Christner that gave the visitors a 3-1 lead.
