COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man is hoping to turn a hobby into something much more.

Jeremiah Geiger was a participant for years in the Whitley County 4-H Fair. He is still involved, but now on a different side.

“That was my passion, showing hogs at fair,” he said. “I showed hogs for 10 years.”

Currently, Geiger raises animals and sells them to students wishing to participate in the fair. The operation is small so far, but is not without its struggles.

“Nothing went right this fall,” Geiger said. “I couldn’t get (my animals) bred.”

Geiger recognizes that this dream can take time to cultivate before it fully blooms. He spent some time selling animals right after he finished college in 2006. He took a couple of years off and then got back into it. Selling show animals takes two investments — time and money.

“The first couple of years you are just trying to get established,” Geiger said. “It takes some money to get started.”

Despite some of these difficulties, Geiger is still making future plans.

“Next year I am hoping to get a couple more sows and maybe have a couple litters,” he said.

Soon, warm weather will return. Geiger will get a chance to watch animals he has sold compete at the fair.

“I like watching kids grow and learn how to take care of their animals,” he said. “I like being able to watch them show animals they purchased from me at the fair.”
