TEAMS GEARING UP FOR GAMES: New Haven, Wabash, C. Noble on tap for local teams this weekend

WHITLEY COUNTY — Columbia City’s boys travel to New Haven Friday night to face a struggling Bulldogs’ squad.
New Haven, which has been a dominant contender in recent years, is 4-9 and 2-2 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, with losses to Carroll and Norwell and wins over Bellmont and DeKalb.

Columbia City’s girls take a shot at New Haven Saturday night at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs are 5-13 and 1-5 in the NHC.
Columbia City’s girls are 18-4 with only one loss at home, against Homestead (19-2).

BASKETBALL: Local squads remain in AP’s Top 10

WHITLEY COUNTY — Some of Columbia City’s basketball teams are getting recognized at the state level, after earning multiple weeks in the Associated Press’ Top 10 poll.

Churubusco’s boys have been ranked in Class 2A for several weeks. The Eagles dropped their second game of the season to Manchester on Saturday, but rebounded with a 100-50 win over Lakeland Christian Tuesday. The squad is seventh in its class.

Columbia City’s girls are in the Top 10 for the second week, sitting at No. 8 in Class 3A with a 17-4 record.

LETTER OF INTENT: Cassie Bosselman signs to University of Saint Francis

CCHS senior Cassie Bosselman signs a letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Saint Francis. Pictured from left: front Debi, Bosselman, Cassie Bosselman, Gary Bosselman. Back: Columbia City Head Volleyball Coach Trish Hinen, University of Saint Francis Head Volleyball Coach Scott Haddix. Bosselman led the Eagles with 321 assists this past season, and was an All-Northeast Region Volleyball Honorable Mention selection.

COL. CITY WIN: Lady Eagles knock-out Northrop, 49-28

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s girls basketball team took control of Northrop early in the game en route to a 49-28 victory Tuesday night in Fort Wayne.

Lady Eagle Elise Cormany provided the first-quarter spark to put Columbia City ahead in the first stanza, scoring back-to-back field goals, along with a 3-pointer by Aubrey Wright, to give Columbia City a 7-2 lead halfway through the first quarter.

LADY 'CATS WIN: Fourth quarter spurt powers Lady Wildcats past Lakeland

LAGRANGE — The Whitko Lady Wildcats traveled to Lakeland High School Tuesday night, using a fourth-quarter outburst to come away with a come-from-behind 48-39 win over the host Lady Lakers.

After both teams put up nine first-quarter points, the Wildcats outscored the Lady Lakers by a single point in the second, 12-11, to take a 21-20 lead at halftime.

'BUSCO NET 100 POINTS: Eagles down Lakeland Christian

WARSAW — Churubusco’s boys basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night as the Eagles played host to Lakeland Christian Academy, beating the Cougars 100-50.

The Eagles suffered their second loss of the season, breaking an 11-game win streak, Saturday against Manchester in overtime.

Tuesday night, the Cougars started the game in a 2-3 zone which didn’t stop ’Busco from driving to the
basket.

WRESTLING: ’Busco grapplers place fifth at NECC

ALBION — The Churubusco Eagles took fifth place at Saturday’s Northeast Corner Conference wrestling tournament held at Central Noble.

Prairie Heights took the team title with 221 points. Garrett was second scoring 158 points, with West Noble third at 154 points. Eastside was fourth at 129 points, followed by Churubusco at 98. Fairfield took sixth with 89 points followed by Central Noble , Lakeland and Fremont with 88, 85, and 78 points respectively. Angola and Westview rounded out the score with 40 and 38 points.

WAWASEE TOURNEY CHAMPS: ISMS seventh-grade boys take win

SYRACUSE — Indian Springs Middle School’s 7th grade Eagles boys’ basketball team used team defense and strong team play to win the Wawasee tournament, downing Milford 40-9 and Manchester 37-25 to take the title.
In the morning game, the Eagles took the court against Milford Middle School.

TRC VICTORY: Whitko girls grab

WABASH — Whitko’s girls basketball team picked up a Three Rivers Conference win over Northfield Saturday, 37-28.

The Lady Wildcats came from behind, after facing a 13-5 deficit at the end of the first quarter.
Whitko scored 10 points in the second to make the halftime score 17-15, in favor of Northfield.

EAGELS WIN: Col. City holds off DeKalb, 52-46

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team held on for a 52-46 win over DeKalb Saturday to improve to 3-1 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

After a fourth-quarter comback put DeKalb within four points with less than two minutes left on the clock, the Hazen brothers, Brachen and Parker, both threw down momentum-stealing dunks to seal the win.
Columbia City opened the game with a 8-7 lead behind four points apiece from Parker Hazen and Mason Coverstone.
